UMNO has firmly stated that the political arrangement underpinning Malaysia’s Federal Unity Government does not extend to Johor, positioning the party to independently chart its electoral strategy ahead of the state polls expected in the coming months.
The declaration follows a meeting of the party’s Supreme Council, which resolved that Johor’s government was established before the formation of the Federal Unity Government and therefore remains outside the scope of the coalition agreement forged after the 15th General Election.
UMNO Secretary-General Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party retains the right to determine its own political direction in any election, including the upcoming state polls in Johor and Negeri Sembilan.
"Therefore, the agreement on the formation of the Malaysian Unity Government at the Federal level does not bind any state government.
"UMNO has the right to determine the party's position and direction ahead of any election, including the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections, the dates of which will be determined by the Election Commission (EC)," he said.
Asyraf emphasised that Johor's administration was formed without the involvement of parties from Pakatan Harapan and predates the Federal Unity Government arrangement, making it a distinct political entity with its own mandate.
The party also dismissed suggestions that its intention to seek a fresh mandate in Johor would undermine or betray the national coalition government.
"The decision by UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) to defend the state's mandate is not a betrayal of the Federal Government, as alleged by certain parties.
"It is a legitimate, mature and constitutional democratic practice to return the mandate fully to the people," Asyraf said.
The statement is expected to fuel speculation over potential electoral alignments in Johor, where Barisan Nasional secured a commanding mandate in the previous state election and has since governed without formal cooperation from Pakatan Harapan.
Despite asserting its autonomy at state level, UMNO moved to reassure coalition partners that its commitment to the Federal Unity Government remains unchanged.
"UMNO will continue to support the Malaysian Unity Government formed after the 15th General Election (GE15) in accordance with the decree of the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong until the next election," Asyraf said.
The party stressed that cooperation within the Federal Unity Government would continue until Parliament is dissolved for the 16th General Election, signalling that any state-level electoral decisions should not be interpreted as a challenge to the national governing arrangement.
At the same time, UMNO indicated it remains open to future political partnerships, provided they are built on mutual confidence and genuine commitment.
"UMNO is open to any form of cooperation with any party in the interest of national political stability and the well-being of the people. Any form of cooperation must be founded on the principles of sincerity and trust," Asyraf said.
The remarks underscore UMNO’s attempt to balance its dual role as a central pillar of the Federal Unity Government while preserving strategic flexibility in key state contests that could shape the political landscape ahead of the next general election. - June 11, 2026
