PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has appealed to all political parties contesting the Johor state election to uphold civility, humility and good conduct throughout the campaign, saying democratic competition should unite rather than divide the people.
With nomination day scheduled for Saturday, Anwar said contests involving three or more candidates are a natural part of the democratic process, but stressed that political parties should campaign with dignity and avoid displays of arrogance.
"Three, six-way contests are normal in a democratic system. The important thing is that campaigning is conducted politely, with good morals, and that no one forgets where they came from.
"As for us, within Pakatan Harapan we will continue reaching out to the people because of the performance we have shown. Do not be arrogant, do not say, 'reject that person, reject them'... no, it is better to work together," he told reporters after Friday prayers at Masjid Jameatus Solehah in Dengkil.
Anwar said politicians should adopt a more moderate approach by engaging and serving the public instead of deepening political divisions.
"Malaysia is what it is today. We should adopt a more moderate attitude. Try to serve and engage with as many people in our society as possible," he said.
Johor's 56-seat State Legislative Assembly was dissolved on June 1 after receiving the consent of the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, paving the way for the state's 16th state election.
Barisan Nasional enters the election as the incumbent administration after winning 40 of the 56 seats in the 2022 state election. Pakatan Harapan secured 12 seats, Perikatan Nasional won three and MUDA captured one.
Nomination takes place on Saturday, followed by early voting on July 7, with polling scheduled for July 11. - June 26, 2026
