LOTUS’S Malaysia confirmed that it has taken appropriate disciplinary action in line with the company's internal policy, following a recent incident where a pregnant woman was accused of stealing at the supermarket's branch in Selayang, Selangor.
The company said in a statement that action was taken after it completed its investigation into the incident, which also went viral on social media.
"We found that the way this incident was handled did not meet the standards of service and hospitality that customers should expect from Lotus's, nor the standards we set for ourselves.
"To the customer, his wife and their families, we would like to apologise for the incident.
"No customer should have to go through such an experience while shopping with us. We are deeply sorry for the experience they had. We have also contacted the family directly and remain committed to regaining their trust," it said.
Lotus’s said it is now taking steps to strengthen guidelines, procedures and training to ensure all staff continue to practice the set service standards and prevent a repeat of this incident.
At the same time, the retailer also expressed regret over reports of personal harassment and online threats directed at employees and their immediate family members throughout the incident.
"We ask that all parties respect the privacy, well-being and self-esteem of each individual involved and allow this matter to proceed with understanding and courtesy," it said.
The media previously reported that the husband of a pregnant woman disputed the actions of the supermarket supervisor who made his wife stand for 20 minutes after being accused of stealing.
The man, identified as Fareez, 25, said his 23-year-old and heavily pregnant wife was accused of stealing items that were supposedly hidden in her clothes. – July 15, 2026
