SEVERAL individuals have been arrested after a 16-year-old student and his father were allegedly assaulted outside a national secondary school in Seri Kembangan, in an incident that gained widespread attention after videos circulated on social media.
Serdang District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Muhamad Farid Ahmad said the suspects would be brought before the Petaling Jaya Magistrates' Court today for remand proceedings under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
He said police received a report regarding a fight involving several students and the father of one of the students.
"The incident occurred at about 12.45pm on July 3 while the victim was walking towards his motorcycle outside the school.
"The victim was called over by several students from the same school before being surrounded and assaulted by all the suspects," he said in a statement.
Muhamad Farid said the teenager suffered injuries to his lips and knees, as well as bruises and pain across his body.
The victim's father, who attempted to intervene and stop the assault, was also attacked and knocked to the ground.
"The victim's father sustained injuries to his hands and legs and suffered pain across his body.
"The police are working closely with the school authorities and the parents to ensure the incident is handled professionally and in accordance with the law," he said.
Police have opened an investigation under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting, which carries a maximum penalty of two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.
The case is also being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both upon conviction.
Muhamad Farid urged the public not to speculate or circulate unverified information that could interfere with the ongoing investigation.
