Further intervention such as balloon angioplasty or stent placement is unnecessary, Doctors say - July 26, 2026

FORMER Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is recovering well after undergoing a coronary procedure, with his medical team deciding that no further intervention is required following a detailed assessment.

Najib's lawyers from Messrs Shafee & Co said in a statement that he would continue his recovery process under close medical supervision.

The legal firm said doctors had detected a blockage in Najib's coronary arteries following a series of medical evaluations conducted over the past several weeks, leading to the decision for further assessment through a coronary angiogram.

Based on the initial findings, the medical team had advised that there was an estimated 95 per cent likelihood that Najib would require further intervention, either through balloon angioplasty or the insertion of a stent.

"After the coronary angiogram and comprehensive assessment were completed today, the treating specialists found that neither balloon angioplasty nor stent placement was required.

"Instead, the blockage can be effectively managed through medication, continuous medical monitoring and follow-up treatment," the statement said.

The firm said the decision to proceed with the procedure was made entirely based on medical necessity and clinical findings available at the time.

"Given the high probability that further intervention would be required, concerns regarding the procedure were real and justified.

"Fortunately, the coronary angiogram showed that the blockage could be managed without the need for balloon angioplasty or stent placement," it said.

Najib's family expressed their appreciation to the cardiology and cardiothoracic specialists, nurses and medical teams at the Cardiothoracic and Cardiology Centre of Hospital Sultan Idris Shah, Serdang, for their professionalism, expertise and dedicated care throughout the process.

"The family also wishes to convey its deepest gratitude to all Malaysians for their continued prayers, support and well wishes," the statement added. - July 26, 2026
