KOTA TINGGI – A pregnant woman had to drive two and a half hours to find a flood relief centre after her house in Taman Kota Jaya, near here, was flooded, last Saturday.

Despite the fatigue and exhaustion, Fazila Hamdan, 29, had to continue driving after four centres had reached full capacity.

“I had to drive the car with my children sleeping in the back seats. They got tired after helping me move some of our belongings to another car driven by my husband.

“Two relief centres in Taman Daiman were full, so I had to turn back to Taman Kota Jaya, where I was informed that the two centres there were also full.

“I had to contact the Civil Defence Force and tell them I am heavily pregnant... Finally, we got a place at Kota Tinggi Vocational College,” she said at the relief centre here yesterday.

Fazila and her husband, Shahabuddin Sakiman, 34, together with their children, aged between 3 and 7, sought refuge at about 1.30am but entered the centre only at about 5am.

The housewife, who is six months pregnant, said on the first day of the incident, the water level rose rapidly in Kota Tinggi, causing many houses to be affected.

However, she said she was grateful that pregnant mothers like her were given priority, such as being given minor treatment and counselling by nurses at the centre.

She said the site was also comfortable and the facilities provided adequate. – Bernama, January 6, 2021
