THE nation has unveiled a RM4.3 billion renewable energy investment pipeline and launched a new 10-year national energy efficiency strategy as the 7th International Sustainable Energy Summit (ISES) 2026 opened here today.
The initiatives were announced as regional energy policymakers, industry leaders and experts gathered at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre for the two-day summit, which seeks to accelerate ASEAN’s transition towards a low-carbon energy system.
Organised by the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia and supported by the Electricity Supply Industry Trust Account Unit (AAIBE) under the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), ISES 2026 is themed “Envisioning Sustainable Energy Beyond Borders”.
The summit was officiated by Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Haji Mohd Nasir.
Also attending were Public Services Director General and SEDA Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Dr Wan Ahmad Dahlan Haji Abdul Aziz, PETRA secretary-general Datuk Sri Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli, and SEDA Malaysia chief executive officer and ISES 2026 organising chairman Datuk Hamzah Hussin.
A key development at the opening was the launch of the National Energy Efficiency Policy and Action Plan 2026–2035 (NEEAP 2.0), which is designed to guide Malaysia’s energy efficiency initiatives over the next decade.
Developed under PETRA, NEEAP 2.0 is aligned with the National Energy Policy 2022–2040, National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030), as well as the Twelfth and Thirteenth Malaysia Plans.
SEDA Malaysia also announced the results of its 2026 Feed-in Tariff (FiT) E-Bidding Programme, with 42 out of 48 applications for biogas, biomass and small hydropower projects receiving approval.
The successful projects represent a combined net export capacity of 331.36 megawatts (MW), comprising 16 biogas projects with a capacity of 26.19MW, 11 biomass projects totalling 135.94MW and 15 small hydropower projects with a combined capacity of 169.23MW.
The newly approved FiT projects are expected to generate about RM4.3 billion in private investment and create approximately 7,738 indirect employment opportunities across Malaysia’s energy sector.
ISES 2026 will feature high-level plenary sessions and technical discussions covering regional grid interconnectivity, energy storage, bioenergy, clean fuels and sustainable financing mechanisms.
The summit is aimed at strengthening cross-border energy cooperation and advancing practical solutions to support ASEAN’s long-term transition towards a more resilient and sustainable energy system. - August 11, 2026
