A SINGAPOREAN restaurant owner pleaded not guilty to three charges, including obstructing policemen and possessing a dangerous weapon at the Sessions and Magistrates' Courts in Johor Bahru, today.
The accused, Gary Lim Kian Liang, 46, made the plea before Judge Nor Aziati Jaafar and Magistrate Nurzihan Abdul Rehman after the charge was read out in English by an interpreter.
Before Nor Aziati, the accused was charged with possessing an 8.5-centimetre knife without a valid permit on Jalan Lingkaran Dalam towards Bangunan Sultan Iskandar at about 12.15 am last Sunday.
For the offence, he was charged under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Dangerous Weapons Act 1958, which carries a prison sentence of up to five years and not exceeding 10 years.
Before Nurzihan, he was charged with intentionally obstructing Lance Corporal Mohd. Rahimi Mohd. Ali in the performance of his duties at the same time, location and date.
For the offence, he is charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum prison sentence of two years or a fine of up to RM10,000 or both, if convicted.
At the same time, the accused is also charged with intentionally causing injury to a 30-year-old local woman using a knife at the same location, at about 11.58 pm, August 15.
For the offence, he is charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to 10 years or a fine with whipping or any two of these punishments.
Lawyer representing the accused, S. Selvanteran, said in his appeal that the accused is supporting a wife and a mother who are elderly and do not have a regular income.
“The accused also has a mental health problem, namely ‘major depression’ and requires continuous health treatment,” he said.
Both courts then set bail at RM20,000, and the case will be mentioned again on September 25.
Meanwhile, a local man who was also involved in the fight that went viral on social media, G. Thinesh Kumar, 28, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate A. Shaarmini to charges of causing injury to the Singaporean while wearing a helmet at the same location and time.
For the offence, he was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to 10 years or a fine with whipping or any two of these punishments.
The accused, who was not represented by a lawyer, was granted bail of RM5,000, while the case was set for mention on September 15. – August 20, 2026
