DATUK Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi did not sound like a deputy prime minister simply defending the government at Umno’s annual assembly this year.
The Umno president used the party’s biggest political platform to take a harder line on several government policies, including taxation, while reminding members that Umno should once again be allowed to lead the country.
His “cukuplah guru” message added another layer to a speech that appeared less about defending the unity government and more about drawing a line around Umno’s own political interests.
That makes the timing worth watching.
In less than a month, on October 8, the Federal Court is scheduled to hear an application by Zahid and the Attorney-General for leave to appeal in connection with the Malaysian Bar’s challenge involving the 47 charges linked to Yayasan Akalbudi.
The hearing should not be confused with a reopening of the charges against Zahid.
The 47 charges were classified as no further action, or NFA, after the Attorney-General’s Chambers assessed further investigations and materials submitted in the case in January.
But the legal dispute surrounding that decision remains alive.
The Court of Appeal had allowed the Malaysian Bar to proceed with its challenge, leading the matter to the Federal Court.
There is no evidence, however, that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ordered the charges to be revived or that Zahid’s latest criticism of the prime minister was prompted by the case.
The decision on the prosecution falls within the authority of the relevant legal institutions. Without evidence, it would be wrong to turn it into a political decision by Anwar.
Still, politics rarely treats timing as irrelevant.
Zahid’s tougher language comes as Umno begins positioning itself for GE16, when the party will have to convince its supporters that it remains more than just one component of Anwar’s coalition government.
That is a difficult balancing act.
As deputy prime minister, Zahid has a stake in keeping the unity government intact.
As Umno president, he also has to protect the party’s identity, interests and electoral prospects.
Those two roles do not always point in the same direction.
His speech may therefore have been less about breaking with Anwar and more about reminding the prime minister that Umno has its own political base — and its own ambitions.
That distinction is important.
The unity government has already shown that disagreements between its component parties can be managed without necessarily threatening its survival.
But Zahid’s position makes his words harder to dismiss as ordinary coalition politics.
He is speaking not only to Anwar, but to an Umno membership that will ultimately decide whether the party remains comfortable as part of the current arrangement or seeks a different path after the next general election.
For now, there is no evidence connecting Zahid’s remarks to his legal proceedings.
But the proximity of the two events will inevitably invite scrutiny.
Perhaps it is simply an Umno president doing what he needs to do before an election — toughening his message, rallying his base and reminding his partners that the party still matters.
Or perhaps it is an early indication that the political understanding between Anwar and Zahid is becoming more complicated.
Either way, the coming weeks will be worth watching. – September 12, 2026
