Uni student charged over crash that killed four family members

A 19-YEAR-OLD university student in Singapore was charged in the Magistrates’ Court in Kluang today with reckless and dangerous driving over a crash that killed four members of the same family in June.

Goh Yin Zun pleaded not guilty after the charge was read out before Magistrate Norasidah A Rahman.

Goh was charged with driving a Mercedes-Benz in a manner that was dangerous to other road users at KM27 of Jalan Renggam-Simpang Renggam at about 1.19pm on June 1.

The charge was framed under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum five-year jail term and a fine of up to RM15,000 upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Nik Noratini Nik Azam handled the prosecution, while Goh was represented by lawyers Mohd Daud Ismail and Hang Lee Ying.

Nik Noratini initially offered bail of RM20,000, but the defence sought a lower amount, citing Goh’s age and status as a young offender.

Mohd Daud told the court that Goh was pursuing a diploma in business studies in Singapore and had cooperated with police throughout his remand before being released on police bail in June.

The court subsequently granted Goh bail of RM10,000 with one surety and ordered him to report to a nearby police station once a month.

The case was fixed for mention on Nov 20 for the submission of documents.

The June 1 crash involved five vehicles on Jalan Renggam-Simpang Renggam in front of Simpang Renggam Prison.

The four victims were Aiman Mohd Rashid, 36; his wife, Nor Azlina Abd Latip, 33; Aiman’s mother-in-law, Semek Mat Soh, 73; and his 10-year-old niece, Nur Airish Syifa Sidek.
