A 21-YEAR-OLD woman was killed after the motorcycle she was riding was struck and run over by a trailer at the Alor Setar Mall traffic-light junction on Friday.
The victim, Nur Atiqah Umairah Suhaimi, was believed to have been travelling alongside the trailer from Masjid Aman towards Alor Setar Mall and Taman Desa Seraya at about 5.50pm.
Kota Setar district police chief ACP Syed Basri Syed Ali said preliminary investigations indicated that the motorcycle was travelling too close to the left side of the trailer, in an area believed to be the lorry’s blind spot.
He said the collision occurred as both vehicles were at the traffic-light junction and began moving to turn right after the lights turned green.
“When the traffic light turned green, both vehicles began moving to turn right.
“The trailer, which was on the right side of the motorcycle, then sideswiped and struck the motorcycle,” he said in a statement today.
Syed Basri said the impact threw the victim from the motorcycle before she was run over by the trailer.
“She was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 40-year-old trailer driver was uninjured,” he said.
The victim worked at a cafe in the area.
Police are continuing investigations, including efforts to locate independent witnesses and examine closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from around the scene.
The vehicles involved have also been detained for further inspection.
Syed Basri said a urine screening test on the trailer driver was negative.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. - September 19, 2026
