FORMER prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad spent a quiet few minutes at the grave of his late wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, at Pusara Negara in Presint 20 today.

Mahathir arrived at about 11.05 am with family members and remained at the cemetery for roughly 15 minutes.

He was seen praying beside Siti Hasmah’s grave and scattering rose petals. He appeared emotional and was seen shedding tears during the visit.

The visit came as Mahathir was returning from the National Heart Institute (IJN), where he had undergone his regular treatment.

His press secretary, Sufi Yusoff, said Mahathir was tired after getting little sleep following Siti Hasmah’s death on Monday.

Siti Hasmah, 100, died at IJN on Monday after her condition deteriorated suddenly. Her son, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir, confirmed her death.

She and Mahathir had been married for 70 years and had seven children. A pioneering Malay woman doctor, Siti Hasmah built a public legacy of her own through her work in medicine, women’s health and community welfare.

She was accorded a state funeral and laid to rest at Pusara Negara on the same day. – October 1, 2026
