JOHOR BARU – Two officers of the state’s Malaysian Inspection and Quarantine Services Department (Maqis) have been detained over the meat cartel scandal that erupted early last month.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) detained the duo on suspicion of being involved in corruption over the smuggling in of frozen non-halal raw meat from banned source countries.
According to sources, both male suspects, aged 27 and 31 years, were detained at the Johor MACC office last night at 11pm.
Johor MACC director Datuk Azmi Alias confirmed the arrests but declined to comment further as the case is still under investigation.
He added the officers were taken to the Johor Baru magistrates' court this morning for a remand order. – Bernama, January 7, 2020
