PRIVATE-sector employers in Selangor who choose Oct 25 as a state event holiday marking the 25th anniversary of Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s reign must grant it as a paid public holiday to their employees.

The Peninsular Malaysia Labour Department (JTKSM) said the state event holiday is an optional public holiday for private-sector employers in Selangor, but those who select it as one of their paid public holidays are required to provide the benefit to their employees.

It said employers whose weekly rest day falls on Sunday must provide a replacement public holiday on Monday, Oct 26, in accordance with Section 60D(1) of the Employment Act 1955.

“As an alternative, employers may, with the agreement of their employees, replace the paid public holiday with another day in accordance with Section 60D(1A) of the Employment Act 1955,” it said in a statement today.

JTKSM said the declaration of the state event holiday was made under subsection 9(1) of the Holidays Act 1951 (Act 369), which allows a state government to declare any day a public holiday for the state.

The Selangor government had previously announced Oct 26 as a replacement holiday because the highlight of the Sultan’s 25th anniversary celebrations falls on Sunday, Oct 25.

The celebrations mark Sultan Sharafuddin’s 25 years on the Selangor throne, with the Oct 25 programme featuring several key ceremonial events. -  October 1, 2026
