SEVERE weather during April's inter-monsoon period caused a 2.5-fold spike in lightning-induced building fires across Malaysia, contributing to a total of 42 structural blazes recorded between January and August, according to the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM).

JBPM Director-General Datuk Sri Nor Hisham Mohammad disclosed that April recorded 13 incidents—far exceeding the eight-month monthly average of 5.3 cases.

The surge directly aligns with the March–May inter-monsoon transition, which regularly generates intense thunderstorm activity and severe electrical discharges.

Monthly figures provided by the department indicate five structural fires each in February, May, June, and August; six in July; and three in March. No lightning-triggered building fires were reported in January.

"When lightning strikes residences, commercial buildings, electrical substations or industrial facilities, the powerful electrical surges can damage roofs, building structures and electrical systems, or ignite fires," The Star reported Nor Hisham saying, stressing that such incidents require immediate suppression and site stabilization to prevent widespread structural loss.

In addition to combating active blazes, emergency units—including Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) and special tactical teams—regularly handle secondary hazards during storm periods, such as rescuing individuals struck outdoors or clearing debris and fallen trees trapping victims.

To prevent structural damage and casualties during severe weather, JBPM advises property owners to install properly grounded lightning arresters and surge protection systems, while urging the public to seek immediate shelter indoors or inside enclosed vehicles during thunderstorms. - October 6, 2026
