THE National Registration Department (JPN) has urged the public to stop recirculating an old video of Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail officiating at a civil marriage involving a non-Muslim couple, warning that misleading narratives could fuel public misunderstanding.

In a recent statement posted on Facebook, JPN said the footage was not from a recent event but formed part of its Diamond Jubilee celebration held in conjunction with National Registration Day in 2023.

The department said it viewed the renewed circulation of the clip seriously, noting that the matter had already been officially clarified on Oct 25, 2023.

“Recycling old footage without explaining its actual context, especially when it creates misleading perceptions, is irresponsible and can cause misunderstanding among members of the public,” it said.

JPN said it was legally responsible for registering civil marriages involving non-Muslim couples under the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976 (Act 164), adding that Saifuddin’s involvement in the ceremony was part of the department’s official programme in 2023.

It stressed that the event should be understood in the context of JPN’s statutory duties and responsibilities under the law.

The department also referred to views issued by the Federal Territories Mufti Department on relevant aspects of Islamic law, urging the public to rely on facts and explanations from the relevant authorities rather than assumptions or misleading interpretations.

“Differences in opinion should not be used as a reason to circulate information out of context and create an unfounded controversy,” it said.

JPN urged social media users to verify the authenticity, date and context of recordings before sharing them.

“Stop recycling old issues with misleading narratives.

“Respect the facts, refer to official explanations and do not turn social media into a platform for creating misunderstanding in society,” it said.

The department added that it would continue carrying out its responsibilities professionally, in accordance with the law and in the interests of the public.

On Oct 25, 2023, JPN had clarified that the civil marriage registration involving Saifuddin, which had circulated on social media, was unrelated to the religious rituals or customs of any ethnic group. The ceremony was held at JPN’s office in Putrajaya as part of its Diamond Jubilee celebration. - October 17, 2026
