SELANGOR is undertaking 105 long-term flood mitigation projects costing RM4.28 billion as the state steps up efforts to address recurring flash floods amid increasingly extreme weather conditions.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the state government remained fully committed to tackling flooding through climate-adaptive infrastructure, long-term mitigation plans and immediate interventions in vulnerable areas.

He acknowledged that flooding could not be eliminated overnight, particularly as recent incidents were triggered by unusually heavy rainfall exceeding normal precipitation levels.

"The state government does not promise that floods will disappear overnight, especially when we are facing increasingly extreme climate change. The recent floods were caused by unusually heavy rainfall exceeding normal averages.

"God willing, I am confident that through these long-term plans, the state government is building a Selangor that is better adapted to climate change.

"For those affected at present, immediate assistance will be provided by the state government to flood victims," he said in a recent Threads post.

Heavy rain yesterday afternoon caused flash floods in several parts of Selangor, including Puncak Alam, particularly around Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Alam Suria and Saujana Utama in Sungai Buloh.

Nine temporary relief centres (PPS) were opened in Shah Alam, Klang and Kuala Selangor to accommodate 1,120 victims from 284 families as of 11.30pm.

Amirudin said Selangor established a special task force with the Federal Government and local authorities in 2024 to address fragmented efforts in managing flood risks.

He said all 105 long-term flood mitigation projects were progressing and would be completed in stages.

"While the major projects are being developed, the state government is not sitting idle. Of the 255 immediate projects worth nearly RM70 million in flash flood hotspots, 70 per cent have been completed, with the remainder targeted for completion by the end of this year.

"At the same time, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur are working together on a five-pronged plan, ranging from assessing the capacity of the Batu and Klang Gates dams to identifying new retention pond sites upstream. All these efforts are aimed at addressing flooding," he said. - November 6, 2026
