BUTTERWORTH – An eatery here has made waves with its RM1 menu items, attracting patrons from as far as Johor.

Kedai Roti Canai Sg Dua has been widely praised for offering cheap and wholesome food when the prices of most things are on the rise, and owner Mohamad Ali Ismail wants to keep it that way.

The 51-year-old told The Vibes that he got the idea to sell dishes at RM1 each when he started his business at his late parents’ home in Kg Masjid, Sg Dua.

“My parents have passed away. I intend to do charity with the aim of ‘rewarding’ them because I do business on their land.

“I have been in the food and beverage business since 2016, and I am thankful to always have a full house. My customers are both locals and from outstation.”

He admitted that he does not break even on some days, but added that he has never suffered serious losses.

“I was taught that if you do business, don’t just think of profit, but do it with the intention of making people feel good.

“There have been times when I made RM300 a day, which is RM50 less than the capital spent. But I never complain. I’m still able to provide for my family, afford transportation and pay for my children’s higher education.”

The eatery, which is run by Ali, his wife Lafishah Mat, 47, and their five daughters, is open daily from 7.30am to 1pm except on Thursdays and Fridays, when it serves only breakfast.

It sells almost 30 types of food and drink at 80% below cost, with roti canai sarang telur, roti everest, murtabak and roti telur leleh among its specialities.

Ali said he uses up to 15kg of flour on weekdays, but the amount increases to 20kg on weekends and public holidays.

“Many of my customers aren’t from around here. Some come from as far away as Johor.”

He said he plans to add more items, such as nasi briyani and nasi hujan panas, to the menu, and extend his opening hours to 6pm. – The Vibes, September 27, 2020
