JEJU – South Korean police today said they have discovered a pile of cash amounting to 8.1 billion won (RM29.9 million) at a resort casino on Jeju Island, with the sum potentially linked to an alleged theft by an employee, reported the Yonhap news agency.

Provincial police said investigators are trying to confirm whether the banknotes, which were discovered “randomly” in a safe at Jeju Shinhwa World’s Landing Casino, are part of the 14.56 billion won reported missing from the venue last week.

Investigators also discovered a separate pile of money, amounting to several billion won, at the residence of a female Malaysian executive, a key suspect in the case, who was in charge of handling funds at the casino.

Landing International Development Ltd, the Hong Kong-based operator of the casino, posted on its website last week about the disappearance of the money, and filed a police report through its local affiliate, Landing Entertainment Korea.

Police last week embarked on a manhunt for the woman, having secured security camera footage from the premises.

According to the force, footage at the time of the alleged theft has been erased.

“We are tracking the whereabouts of the cash and the person in question by checking the CCTV footage.”

Police added that investigators are looking into whether there were accomplices, and suspect the involvement of at least two perpetrators. – Bernama, January 13, 2021
