KUALA LUMPUR – The relatively good weather in the peninsula has allowed for a gradual recovery in flood-hit areas, with Pahang’s Raub district given the all-clear.
In Sarawak, however, the number of flood victims has increased threefold from yesterday.
Six districts are seeing their third day of floods, with the number of evacuees increasing to 4,222 at 49 relief centres.
The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee reported that as at 8am today, 2,159 evacuees are at 19 shelters in Kuching district, followed by Serian (1,014 evacuees at 10 shelters), Bau (706 evacuees at 11 shelters), Samarahan (211 evacuees at five shelters), Simunjan (103 evacuees at two shelters) and Miri (29 evacuees at two shelters).
In Pahang, Raub district police chief Kama Azural Mohamed said the last three relief centres to close yesterday were at SK Kundang Patah in Cheroh, the community hall in Dong, and Bukit Pompong Mosque after all 69 victims, including 23 tahfiz students, returned home.
The Welfare Department’s InfoBencana portal showed that the number of evacuees in the state this morning stands at 7,992 at 102 shelters in seven districts.
Pekan has the most victims at 3,317, followed by Maran (1,903), Kuantan (878), Temerloh (792), Bera (715), Lipis (353) and Jerantut (34).
In Johor, good weather sees the number of evacuees dropping to 784 as at 8am from the 892 recorded yesterday.
State Health and Environment Committee chairman R. Vidyananthan said the flood victims are being housed at 10 shelters in five districts.
Kota Tinggi has the highest number of victims at 525, who are being housed at five shelters, followed by Johor Baru (116 evacuees at two shelters), Kluang (50 evacuees at one shelter), Segamat (76 evacuees at one shelter) and Batu Pahat (17 evacuees at one shelter).
In Sabah, the number of flood victims increased slightly to 761 as at 8am from the 712 recorded yesterday afternoon.
The state Disaster Management Committee secretariat said the victims are being housed at 11 relief centres in five districts, namely Kota Marudu, Pitas, Beaufort, Lahad Datu and Paitan. – Bernama, January 15, 2021
