MELAKA – Couples in Melaka who have obtained permission to get married from district Islamic religious offices prior to the movement control order (MCO) being enforced are allowed to proceed with the ceremony during the lockdown.
State Islamic Religious Department director Datuk Md Azhan Samat said, however, the event must be held at the district Islamic religious office with only six people in attendance, namely the “wali” (guardian), registrar, bride and groom, and two witnesses.
“The ceremony should be completed in 20 minutes, including the marriage sermon and reading of the ‘taklik’, and adhere to the standard operating procedures,” he told Bernama today.
He said couples living in red zones are required to first undergo Covid-19 screening, and must test negative three days prior to their marriage solemnisation.
The registrar has the authority to reject marriage applications if the guidelines are not followed, he said.
“Only pressing divorce and ‘rujuk’ (reconcile) applications can be submitted through early appointments, and applicants must bring complete documents,” he said, adding that it is strongly recommended that consultations and enquiries be done online during the MCO period. – Bernama, January 15, 2021
