KOTA KINABALU – The public has been told not to let their guard down even when there is a decline in new Covid-19 cases reported by the government, as the fall is by no means an indicator of the virus’ actual threat.
“We cannot use the single-day results as a barometer of the likely scenario ahead. It goes up and down. So, it’s too early to tell,” Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun told a briefing last night.
“Some results could be delayed due to logistical issues. Delayed results could result in higher cases later on.”
He was commenting on the reason for the drop in coronavirus cases by 56 in the state yesterday.
The authorities earlier predicted that Sabah would see increased infections in this period.
Masidi, who is also state finance minister II and holds the local government and housing portfolio, said Sabahans must continue abiding by the government’s health and safety standard operating procedures.
“Things were improving for a while in December, but got worse after Christmas and the New Year, as merrymaking led many Sabahans to be careless and complacent. We are now seeing the results of our own folly.”
He also called on Sabah folk to stay home if they do not have urgent matters to attend to outside during the movement control order period.
“Stay at home if there is no important matter to attend to. While reducing the risk of exposure to Covid-19, we can also spend time caring for our children, especially during this time of unpredictable weather,” he said, referring to the heavy rains and flooding in certain areas of the state. – The Vibes, January 18, 2021
