JOHOR BARU – Three assistant enforcement officers of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) in Johor were remanded for five days for alleged corrupt activities in connection with the frozen meat cartel scandal.
The remand order, which runs from today until January 23, was issued by Johor Baru court registrar Nur Fathiah Mohd Fedzir following an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The three officers, aged between 40 and 55, were arrested at the state MACC headquarters at 7pm yesterday when they were called in to give their statements.
They are attached with the Maqis office at Tg Pelepas Port, Gelang Patah in Iskandar Puteri; Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex at Sultan Iskandar Building here; and, at the Muar Office.
This is the second arrest involving Maqis personnel in Johor in connection with the meat cartel case.
The first arrests were on January 7 were of two officers, aged 27 and 31.
Last month, Maqis uncovered the cartel's activities of bringing in meat into the country without a halal certificate, before placing fake halal logos on the products for sale in the local market. – Bernama, January 19, 2021
