KOTA KINABALU – A landslide, stretching 150m at Km 20 Jalan Ranau-Tamparuli does not affect the Kota Kinabalu-Sandakan main road on both directions.
Ranau district police chief Sammy Newton said the Kota Kinabalu-Sandakan road, about 90km from here, is passable on both directions as the landslide occurred at the Kinabalu Park car park area.
He said police received a report on the landslide at 7.15am today.
"The cause of the landslide is believed to be due to continuous rain over the past few days in Ranau," he said today.
Sammy said no casualties have been reported so far.
He said Sabah Parks have closed off the landslide area and monitoring work is being carried out by the Ranau Public Works Department.
Meanwhile, Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam, who is also Kundasang assemblyman, said repair works will start immediately.
The works will be hastened as it involves a main road connecting Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan.
"Repair works must be done immediately as many transporters and travellers rely on the road to get to Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan.
"We do not want any accidents and lives lost from the landslide," he said during his visit to the landslide site.
The national park's caretaker, Sabah Parks, meanwhile, said it has closed Kinabalu Park to visitors temporarily. – Bernama, January 20, 2021
