KUALA LUMPUR – The number of new Covid-19 cases fell today, with 3,170 infections recorded from a high of 4,008 yesterday, just as it was announced the movement control order (MCO) in all states, except Sarawak, will end on February 4.
This takes the cumulative number of cases in the country to 172,549.
Meanwhile, deaths hit the double-digits today at 12 fatalities, taking the overall tally to 642.
A total of 2,490 recoveries were also recorded, pushing the total of cases discharged to 130,152.
Of the active cases, 260 are under intensive care, with 103 requiring breathing support.
Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest number of new infections today with 576 cases, followed by Selangor (545), Johor (423), Sabah (401), Perak (245), Penang (171) and Kedah (156).
Kelantan saw 135 cases, followed by Sarawak (132), Melaka (106), Negri Sembilan (102), Terengganu (57), Putrajaya (33), Labuan (32) and Perlis (8).
Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the deaths today involved four victims in Johor, Selangor (3), Sabah (2), and one case each in Negri Sembilan, Perak and Sarawak.
"All cases are citizens. The ministry extends its condolences to all their family members," he told his daily press conference on the Covid-19 situation.
He said his ministry has thus far logged 701 clusters in total, including 16 new clusters today.
Of the total 374 clusters that have ended are seven today, comprising the Kaya, Enggor, Perdana 6, Jalan Tun construction site, Darul construction site, Jalan College and Jalan Lapan clusters.
He added that 11 of the new clusters recorded today in Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Sabah, Kedah, Johor and Selangor are workplace-related.
The workplace clusters comprised the Jalan Terolak, Kota Muhibbah, Silimpopon, Seri Bayu, Ladang Sebrang, Orion, Tampoi Tujuh, Jalan Sempadan, Jalan Slim, Pasar Borong KL 2 and Jalan Canang Emas clusters.
Another two new clusters – Mandin Jaya and Jalan Kelapa – in Penang and Selangor, respectively, were of high-risk groups.
Dr Noor Hisham added that the new Taman Sejahtera cluster in Perak is related to religious activities, while the Kg Tanah Merah cluster in Terengganu and Gunung Raya cluster in Kedah are community clusters. – The Vibes, January 21, 2021
