KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia today registered 5,725 new Covid-19 cases, an all-time high, with a whopping 3,126 in Selangor alone.
The country now has 203,933 infections in total, said a statement by Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah this evening.
Another 16 virus fatalities were recorded, taking overall deaths to 733.
Malaysia saw its highest daily death toll on January 22, with 18 victims.
Selangor’s caseload today leaves Kuala Lumpur, with 687 infections, a distant second, followed by Johor (684), Sabah (288), Sarawak (179), Terengganu (137) and Kedah (125).
States with fewer than 100 cases are Penang (99), Kelantan (93), Melaka (74), Perak (73), Negri Sembilan (69), Pahang (67), Putrajaya (16), Labuan (5) and Perlis (3).
The Health Ministry recorded another 3,423 recoveries, bringing the total to 157,722.
Of the new infections, seven were imported, five of whom are Malaysians.
There are 301 coronavirus patients in intensive care, with 115 on ventilators.
Among the new cases, 419 are related to outbreaks at lock-ups, immigration detention centres and prisons – the Jalan Harapan Prison cluster (224), Jalan Sg Jelok Prison (116), Tembok Renggam (45), Tembok Sg Udang (16), Tembok Mempaga (11), Tembok Taiping (5) and Tembok Bukit Besi (2).
The new deaths were recorded in Selangor (9), Sabah (2), and Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Melaka, Kelantan and Perak (1 each).
Malaysia also recorded 12 new clusters, nine of which are workplace-related.
The Persiaran Subang cluster involves Petaling and Klang districts, where targeted Covid-19 screening conducted at a factory in Batu Tiga detected 16 cases.
Another workplace cluster, known as Industri Indah, is in Klang, where targeted screening at a factory in the Meru Indah Industrial Park, involving 87 individuals, saw 47 testing positive.
Kuala Lumpur has two workplace clusters, namely Tapak Bina Jalan Klang and Tapak Bina Jalan Vista.
Targeted screening carried out at a construction site in Jalan Klang Lama found 50 cases. Similarly, 47 infections were found at a construction site in Jalan Bukit Vista Komanwel, Taman Sukan Extreme, Cheras.
Johor has five new workplace clusters spread across the state. The Jalan Kota Burok cluster in Muar involves factory workers in Bukit Pasir, with 30 cases.
The Jalan Bypass cluster in Segamat was detected after targeted screening at a public training institute saw 23 individuals testing positive.
Johor Baru’s Jalan Bistari Dua cluster originated from a factory in Skudai’s Jaya Industrial Park, where 17 people tested positive, while the Jalan Empayar factory cluster in Nusajaya has 18 cases.
The Jalan Rusa Scientex cluster, also in the Johor capital, saw six people testing positive in targeted screening at a supermarket.
In Sabah, meanwhile, the Tinanom community cluster in Ranau has 46 cases, while the Jalan Sepanggar cluster in Kota Kinabalu, with 12 cases, is the result of a government staffer testing positive.
