KUALA LUMPUR – The Sg Udang prison and staff quarters in Melaka will be placed under the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) from Wednesday until February 16 due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases there.
Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said in a statement today that this was decided by the government following advice and a risk assessment conducted by the Health Ministry.
As of yesterday, the Health Ministry has conducted 339 swab tests, of which a third of them (113) returned positive.
“This involves 79 detainees, 22 prison staff and 12 family members.”
Ismail Sabri said the EMCO is to make it easier for the Health Ministry to conduct targeted Covid-19 screenings on all detainees, staff and close contacts.
Meanwhile, he said a total of 826 individuals were arrested yesterday for flouting government standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Of this, 776 were issued compounds while the remaining 50 have been remanded, he added.
“Among the offences are no physical distancing (170), interstate and inter-district traveling without permission (158), not wearing face masks (128) and leaving the house without a concrete reason (69). – The Vibes, February 1, 2021
