KUALA LUMPUR – Replacing old and obsolete pipes, especially those made of asbestos and cement, covering 150km under the Old Pipe Replacement Programme is one of the key performance indicators set by Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd this year to reduce the rate of its non-revenue water (NRW).
CEO Suhaimi Kamaralzaman told a virtual press conference today that of the RM293 million allocation to bring down the NRW rate, the company will use RM170 million for the programme, and spend RM16 million on replacing old and damaged water meters.
“Other KPIs include having Air Selangor leak specialists and inspectors detect at least 78,000 cases of leaking pipes under the Active Leakage Control Programme.”
He added that 75 district metering zones will be established, and another 1,780 sensors installed on the main pipes to detect pressure changes and leakage early.
Air Selangor reduced the average NRW rate to 28.6% last year from 29.7% in 2019, he said, exceeding the target set by the National Water Services Commission.
He said the company is committed to reducing the rate to 25% by 2025, and 15% by 2049.
Its target this year is to reduce the rate to 28.1%, said Suhaimi.
“Air Selangor is optimistic, and will continue to actively work to lower the NRW rate this year.
“This initiative has proven to be successful for three consecutive years, namely a consistent reduction in the NRW rate based on the target of a 1% decrease each year.” – Bernama, February 3, 2021
