GEORGE TOWN – Large inflatable decorations on the Esplanade grounds in front of the city council here have attracted curious onlookers and raised the question of whether they are part of Penang’s preparations for Chinese New Year next week.
However, state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin’s office told The Vibes that the decorations are for a special programme unrelated to CNY celebrations.
“We are still waiting for a good time to set it up. Once we are ready, we will announce it,” said a staffer.
It is believed that the partially assembled inflatables, which are supposedly tourist attractions, have been there since last month, but plans to set them up have been disrupted by the movement control order (MCO).
Last month, 14 containers of the décor were brought in.
The person managing the site said the set-up was meant to liven up Penang and usher in the Year of the Ox.
Some of the inflatables already prepared have been taken down to discourage crowds from visiting the area.
Yeoh’s office said simple CNY décor will be put up soon.
Some areas on the island already have such decorations up.
Batu Lanchang assemblyman Ong Ah Teong said they are to lend festive cheer to residents amid the MCO.
The three wet markets in his constituency have red lanterns strung up, with the Batu Lanchang market boasting a bamboo tunnel in its parking lot.
“According to Chinese beliefs, putting up lanterns will bring good luck and prosperity throughout the year. I hope these decorations will liven up the mood and bring positivity to all who visit or work at these markets,” said Ong. – The Vibes, February 4, 2021
