KUALA LUMPUR – Attorney-General (AG) Tan Sri Idrus Harun said he is not influenced by the contents of Tan Sri Tommy Thomas’ book, which reflects the former AG as a shallow-thinking person who does not understand the functions of an AG.
Stating that Thomas has insulted the legal institution, Idrus in a statement yesterday said the book’s publication has caused various reactions, including quarters questioning the reliability and competency of the legal officers in the AG’s Chambers.
He said the contents of My Story: Justice in the Wilderness have negatively impacted, especially from the public’s point of view, the chambers, and affected the morale and spirit of officers.
“To me, it is an obvious insult to our legal institution, which we respect and uphold.”
He said he is aware of legal officers having to work under pressure, with time constraints, for challenging tasks, which they sometimes have to work on outside office hours and during weekends, thus sacrificing their time with family to prioritise their job.
He said there is no denying that the commitment and sacrifice given by the officers could not be valued with money.
“Therefore, I would like to emphasise and give an assurance that I will not be influenced by the contents of the book, which clearly reflects the shallow-thinking of the short experience of a person who does not understand the public service institution, especially that of the AG’s Chambers and the functions of the AG.”
Idrus said prior to his appointment, he has served in the judiciary and legal service for almost 35 years, and as solicitor general before being appointed as a Court of Appeal Judge in 2014.
The former Federal Court judge said he does not doubt the ability, skills, commitment and dedication of legal officers in discharging their responsibilities and duties fairly, without fear or favour.
As AG, he said his main duty under the federal constitution is to advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, cabinet or any minister on legal matters to protect the interests and laws of the country. – Bernama, February 5, 2021
