M’sian nabbed in S’pore for supporting IS now in PDRM custody

KUALA LUMPUR – A Malaysian cleaning worker arrested by the Singaporean authorities last July is currently in the custody of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) after being involved in supporting the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group.

A police insider today said the 33-year-old man has been charged in the Johor Baru sessions court and his case will be transferred to the Jalan Duta High Court in Kuala Lumpur soon.

The source said the case has been heard four times in the Johor Baru court, adding that police are waiting for further instruction from the prosecution to transfer the case to the Kuala Lumpur court.

“He was arrested under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012, and charged under Section 130 of the Penal Code for terrorism-related offences,” said the source, adding that the accused and his wife, who is a Singapore citizen, was arrested by the republic’s Internal Security Department (ISD).

The insider said police had been monitoring the suspect’s social media account, and found that he had shown support to the militant group through his Facebook posts.

“We channelled the information to ISD, and the couple were arrested. ISD then handed the husband to PDRM in August last year, while the 34-year-old wife is placed under a restriction order.”

ISD in a statement today said it worked closely with the Malaysian special branch in its investigation into Mohd Firdaus Kamal Intdzam, who was detained under the Internal Security Act in July last year.

Firdaus was believed to have turned radical in 2016, when he intended to join IS in Syria with his wife, Ruqayyah Ramli. – Bernama, February 9, 2021
