MELAKA – Police arrested a 33-year-old man and seized smuggled cigarettes, firecrackers and liquor of various brands worth RM573,000 in Klebang Kechil here on Monday.

Melaka Tengah police chief Afzanizar Ahmad said a team spotted a car with a man behaving in a suspicious manner behind a shoplot at 2.05pm.

In the boot of the Proton Wira car were 221 cartons of cigarettes, and the man later admitted that all the items were taken from his rented house in Taman Limbongan Permai here, he told a press conference here today.

He said the suspect led the police to the rented house, where 2,690 cartons of cigarettes, 144 cans and nine bottles of alcoholic drinks, as well as 21 boxes of firecrackers, which did not have customs approval, were seized.

Initial investigations revealed that the goods were smuggled from a neighbouring country via land routes for sale in grocery shops in the state.

Afzanizar said the suspect is being remanded for three days until tomorrow. – Bernama, February 10, 2021
