GEORGE TOWN – The project to rebuild and strengthen the sea wall at Penang’s Esplanade will be completed by end-2021 after more than two years of interruptions, including the Covid-19 pandemic.
State Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo, who visited the location today, said works on the sea wall and walkway are 50% completed.
“Once this 570m walkway on the northern seafront is ready, the public can stroll and cycle here. We have also planned a green park beyond this walkway.
“There are two things that the state government is prioritising – the first is public safety and health, and the other is the economy. Projects such as this assist us to rise economically, therefore work continues as usual.”
Started in 2018, the RM12.2 million endeavour to fix up the badly eroded sea wall is fully funded by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).
It is one of the 14 improvement projects by the city council, and managed by the George Town Conservation Development Corporation in collaboration with the state government, MBPP and Think City.
MBPP Mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang assured that the project is being closely monitored to ensure it adheres to all specifications and heritage guidelines.
