KUALA LUMPUR – A woman managed to persuade her ex-husband from jumping off the Rawang Bypass bridge following a tense stand-off with the authorities yesterday.
Gombak district police chief Assistant Commissioner Arifai Tarawe said it received an emergency call at 1.30pm and rushed to the scene with firefighters from the Rawang fire station.
Sinar Harian reported that the 50-year-old man was found standing on the ledge of the bridge while holding on to a lamp post when the rescue team arrived.
“The police and firefighters tried to convince him to step down but he failed to heed to the advice and threatened to jump off the bridge.
“In the midst of negotiations, a woman claiming to be the man’s ex-wife came to persuade him from jumping. After some time, he stepped down from the ledge," Arifai said in a statement yesterday.
He said investigations revealed that the couple had divorced last month.
“The man had recently quit his job as a personal driver in an effort to convince his wife to rethink their divorce.
“This was the suspect’s second marriage, which lasted four years. They do not have any children.”
The police, he added, have detained the man and will remand him today for further investigations under Section 309 of the Penal Code for attempted suicide. – The Vibes, February 20, 2021
