KUALA LUMPUR – The Pakatan Harapan presidential council has urged Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to reconvene Parliament next month, hours after a statement by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

In a joint statement issued by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, the council said the sitting should be called by March as consented to by the king previously.

It welcomed the Agong’s statement that Parliament can convene during the emergency period on a date deemed appropriate, on the advice of the prime minister.

This is in line with what is stated in sub-paragraph 14(1)(b) of the Emergency Ordinance (Essential Powers) 2021, it said.

“This is also in line with PH’s stand, as well as that of the majority of MPs, to allow the executive and judiciary to function during an emergency. Parliament must play its role in ensuring that government governance is maintained, and the check and balance continues.

“Therefore, we fully support His Majesty’s desire to restore the position of Parliament, so that it can highlight issues and problems faced by the people during the pandemic, and plan measures to revive the country’s economy.” – The Vibes, February 24, 2021
