PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has requested that Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar seek an immediate audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, to seek forgiveness and clarify issues surrounding the implementation of the house arrest for Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Anwar emphasised that the government acknowledges the King’s decree and authority, and is making preparations to comply with the decision and fulfil the responsibility of executing it.
“I want to clarify that the authority of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is not being disputed.
"Dusuki should explain the legal issues surrounding the matter, including its implications for Najib's 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case.
"I leave it to the Attorney General to elaborate on this case, because this is not the prime minister’s jurisdiction,” he told reporters today.
Anwar said the Attorney General has already requested an audience with His Majesty to explain the current issue.
Earlier, the AGC rejected allegations that it defied a royal decree from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong regarding the implementation of a conditional pardon for Najib.
The AGC maintained that seeking a court clarification on the legal implications of the order for Najib’s release was a responsible step, taken to ensure that the execution of his prison sentence and the conditional pardon are carried out in accordance with the law.
According to the AGC, it has never disputed, set aside, or intended to suspend the Conditional Pardon Order granted by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“The AGC views with seriousness the use of expressions that characterise the actions of the Attorney General as an act of contempt or treason against His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“Such allegations are groundless, given the legal issues raised by the AGC,” the department said.
Yesterday, Najib’s lawyers argued that the AGC lacks the authority to defer the exercise of the royal prerogative of mercy, and that any questions concerning court orders should be addressed within the judicial system.
