A WOMAN lost RM34,193.25 after falling victim to a WhatsApp job scam that promised commissions for promoting hotel advertisements online but instead demanded payments for hotel bookings.
The 39-year-old received the part-time job offer from an individual via WhatsApp on Oct 29 and expressed interest in the opportunity.
A source said she was subsequently instructed to register through a website, Corda.Ltd, allegedly registered in Singapore, by providing her name and bank account number to facilitate commission payments.
"On Nov 1, she was asked to access the website to carry out tasks involving the promotion of hotel advertisements," the source said.
However, the victim was later instructed to make payments for hotel bookings before completing several transactions totalling US$7,515 (approximately RM34,193.25).
"Initially, she was only required to promote hotel advertisements, but was later told to deposit money for hotel bookings through the website.
"The victim subsequently made nine transactions to three different bank accounts. However, after all the payments had been made, the individual asked her to transfer another RM15,000," the source said.
The victim became suspicious after the further payment request and realised she had been cheated before lodging a police report at the Sea Park police station two days ago.
Petaling Jaya district police chief ACP Shamsudin Mamat confirmed receiving the report, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code. - November 6, 2026
