SELAMA – The federal government will call for the 15th general election only when the country recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic, says Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.
Hamzah, who is also home minister, said the immunisation coverage or rate will also be taken into account prior to holding the polls to prevent a fourth wave of infections.
“It is to ensure the government remains accountable to the people. I pray that the pandemic eases in our country and the vaccination is done before we hold the election.”
He said the opposition’s insistence that the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government hold the elections while the Covid-19 situation has yet to subside could be detrimental.
“They forget that Parliament sessions are still on until December this year, and the government can call a parliamentary session within six months.
“Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has agreed to dissolve Parliament (after the pandemic subsides), and the PN government complies with the law. However, there are people who say that the current government is unfair and illegitimate.
“Even the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has agreed to the implementation of the emergency so the government can deal with Covid-19,” he said, adding that he believes the people will continue to trust the prime minister to lead the country. – Bernama, February 27, 2021
