KOTA BARU – The proposed hydroelectric dam in Neggiri, Gua Musang, when built, is expected to solve the flood problem in Kelantan.
Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) chairman Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the dam would act as a flood mitigation system. He said the dam could contain the rain water, thus reducing the volume of water in the rivers.
“We already have hydroelectric dams built at Cameron Highlands and other locations in Pahang, Sungai Perak and at Tasik Kenyir in Terengganu.
“So in May, I will be discussing with the state (Kelantan) government on the project and make an official announcement on it,” he told reporters after handing out contributions in conjunction with the TNB ‘Ceria ke Sekolah’ programme, here, today.
Mahdzir also said that in the long term, TNB would enhance renewable electricity supply including solar and hydroelectric power.
“In supplying electricity, we have four power-generation sources, namely, coal, gas, hydro and solar. Hence, TNB’s efforts now are towards increasing renewable energy including hydro and solar, besides pursuing green technology,” he added.
On another development, Mahdzir said this year, TNB had allocated RM3 million through its ‘Ceria ke Sekolah’ programme to assist over 30,000 students from low-income (B40) families, an increase from RM1 million last year.
“For Kelantan, TNB has chosen 1,400 poor students to receive a contribution of school uniforms and basic items such as school bags and stationery,” he added. – Bernama, February 28, 2021
