GEORGE TOWN – The Penang Fire and Rescue Department has found no elements of foul play in last month’s blaze on the Penang bridge.
Department director Saadon Moktar said the postmortem report prepared by his team is ready to be submitted to Tenaga Nasional Bhd after a power cable caught fire last month.
“However, I cannot reveal the cause of the incident. What I can say is that there is no element of foul play. We will submit the report to Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) as soon as possible.”
He said this after getting his Covid-19 vaccine at the Jalan Perak health clinic here today.
On February 22, a power cable caught fire on the Penang bridge just before evening rush causing massive traffic congestion on both sides of the link, stretching several kilometres.
The incident also caused PLUS Malaysia Bhd to close one lane in each direction to facilitate investigations involving TNB, the fire and rescue department, as well as police.
Meanwhile, Saadon – who was the first member from the department to receive the Covid-19 vaccine in Penang today – said he believed the vaccine is an incentive for all firefighters to better carry out their duties.
He said currently firefighters are exposed to Covid-19 risks during rescue work because they do not know the health status of the victims.
“I do not feel any side effects, and I believe this injection will give us more encouragement to perform better.”
A total of 41 Penang firefighters have now received their jabs in phase 1 of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme. – The Vibes, March 4, 2021
