KOTA KINABALU – Some 35 people started their ascent of Mount Kinabalu today as climbing activities, which were ordered stopped in January due to the movement control order (MCO), resume.
Kinabalu Park manager Yassin Miki said there were 35 climbers and 10 mountain guides this morning.
“We are expecting visitors to the park soon,” he said, adding that only 100 people are allowed to make the climb at any one time, as per health guidelines.
Among the standard operating procedures is for climbers to first test negative for Covid-19, he said.
It is learnt that hundreds of climbing enthusiasts who made bookings before the MCO are on the waiting list.

Sabah is under a 14-day recovery MCO starting today, which sees the partial lifting of the inter-district travel ban.
The state has been divided into six zones, and commuters are not allowed to undertake inter-zone travel.
Kundasang is under Zone 1, which also includes Kota Kinabalu, Kota Belud, Ranau, Tuaran, Penampang, Putatan and Papar.
Mount Kinabalu, a world heritage site, is one of Sabah’s most lucrative tourism attractions, putting millions into the state’s coffers each year. – The Vibes, March 5, 2021
