[UPDATED] New Covid-19 cases below 2,000 mark for second straight day

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia logged 1,683 fresh Covid-19 cases today, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said, marking a consecutive day of new cases below the 2,000 mark in Malaysia.

The new infections today bring the nationwide tally to 313,460 and the death toll to 1,169.

The country also recorded 2,506 recoveries today, bringing the total discharged cases to 291,958.

Ten of the new cases today were imported.

A total of 174 active cases are under intensive care, while 81 require breathing assistance, the ministry said.

In a post on Twitter, Dr Noor Hisham said Selangor recorded the highest number of cases at 746, followed by Sarawak (201), Pulau Pinang (172), Johor (158), and Kuala Lumpur (125).

Sabah recorded 99 cases, followed by Negeri Sembilan (48), Perak (48), Perlis (24). Kedah (15), Kelantan (12), Pahang (12).

Eight cases were detected in Labuan, followed by Melaka (3) and Putrajaya (2).

Dr Noor Hisham said that 61 cases were recorded in detention centres involving the Jalan Awang cluster (42 cases), DTI Persiaran Wawasan cluster (13 cases), Tembok Taiping cluster (3 cases), Tembok Pengkalan Chepa cluster (2 cases), and Tembok Tapah cluster(one case).

He said the source of 24 infections detected in Perlis, of which 13 came from the DTI Persiaran cluster, was still under investigation.

“Monitoring and preventive activities related to the spread of Covid-19 in this cluster are underway,” he said.

Dr Noor Hisham said two deaths were recorded in Selangor, while Pahang logged one. All of today’s fatalities involved locals.

The country has detected a total of 1,199 clusters, including eight new clusters.

Meanwhile 727 clusters have ended, including 14 today, namely the Senai Murni, Bukit Palah, Jelita, Bintang Utama, Jalan Gangsa Dua, Industri Peramu Jaya, Jalan Segama, Kampung Muhibbah, Indah Riang, Jalan Trus, Taman Koperasi, Jalan Pudu, Jalan Banting-Klang, and Ampang Campuran clusters.

Another 472 clusters remained active while 68 had new infections. 

The clusters which saw the highest number of new cases were the Perusahaan 10 cluster (55 cases), Industri Subang cluster (44 cases), and Kemuning Enam cluster (44 cases).

Dr Noor Hisham said five out of the eight new clusters are related to workplaces, two are in detention centres, while one was from the community.

In Selangor, the ministry detected the Kemuning Enam cluster in the Klang district with 44 cases, and the Jalan Sungai cluster in Hulu Langat with six cases.

Sabah recorded the Industri Inanam cluster in Kota Kinabalu with 20 cases, while Johor logged the Jalan Industri Tiga cluster in Pontian with 19 cases.

Kuala Lumpur saw the Jalan Satu construction site cluster in Lembah Pantai with 12 cases, and Perlis recorded the DTI Persiaran Wawasan cluster in Kangar with 14 cases.

Sarawak recorded the Jalan Awang cluster in Sibu with 42 cases, and the Kiba cluster in the same district with 33 cases. – The Vibes, March 7, 2021
