GEORGE TOWN – Communities and individuals interested in setting up urban farming in Penang can look forward to an additional RM1 million by the Agriculture and Food Industries Ministry.
Deputy Minister II Datuk Che Abdullah Mat Nawi, during a recent working visit to Consumers Association of Penang (CAP), said he aims to encourage and expand urban farming in the state to reduce the cost of living.
“There is a national allocation of RM30 million to encourage urban farming under the short-term economic recovery plan (Penjana).
“Although it is not meant just for urban farming, we want to provide tools to introduce urban farming methods that are suited for those living in apartments and condominiums.”
The RM1 million allocation is expected to benefit 46 communities and 733 individuals. Incentives will be given to those who apply for either the individual category (farming set worth RM500) or the community category (farming set worth RM50,000).
Successful applicants will also receive a one-time stock of fertiliser and seeds for ladies fingers, spinach and eggplant.
“Through the cultivation of these items, individuals will be able to save as much as RM110 per month on food expenses,” Che Abdullah said.
“I hope that all recipients will use the tools that have been provided.”
He said the ministry had received 42,370 individual applications last year.
Some RM7.32 million was allocated under Penjana last year, benefiting 632 communities and 13,524 individuals.
CAP education officer Saraswathi Devi Odian told The Vibes that the group is open to providing seeds and guidance on how to grow edibles without the use of chemicals.
“More and more people are requesting to be trained, especially during the pandemic. When people start growing their own food, they will have food security because they have enough to eat.
“Now, many people are grumbling about the price of vegetables and that they can’t afford it, but with a little money, you can start growing your own.”
