GEORGE TOWN – Batu Uban assemblyman A. Kumaresan has lodged a police report after receiving a threat to “shoot him dead” on Facebook yesterday.
The threat, issued by a man believed to be a Penggerak Komuniti Tempatan (PeKT) member, was made on the Persatuan Demi Rakyat Pulau Pinang page, in relation to a video that alleged Kumaresan is not performing his duties as an elected representative.
“If I see you and your MPKK members, I will shoot you all for causing the people to suffer,” said the post, referring to the Village Community Management Council.
Kumaresan told The Vibes that he was informed by his officers about the comments yesterday, and he lodged a report at the Northeast district police station.
“I am very worried for my safety and that of my family. Lately, I often come home late at night because I work as an elected representative.
“Therefore, I decided to lodge a police report yesterday evening, to ensure my safety.”
He expressed hope that police will conduct an immediate investigation, as the man who made the threat did not use a fake Facebook account.
The 27-second video showed several individuals believed to be PeKT members handing food packs to a family under Covid-19 quarantine in Kg Sg Nibong Kecil.
The Facebook user who made the threat also asked whether Kumaresan and MPKK members have visited and provided assistance to residents.
Northeast district police chief Soffian Santong confirmed that two reports have been lodged over the matter.
The case will be investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation via anonymous communication, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for misuse of the internet. – The Vibes, March 23, 2021
