KUCHING – A man is feared dead after he was trapped in a deep pit after the area in which he was carrying out illegal gold mining activities collapsed due to soil movement this morning.
The man was trapped inside the former goldmine in Gunung Tabai, Bau, near here, with two others.
Bau police chief Poge Nyaon said the victim was found buried under the rubble by a search-and-rescue (SAR) team.
He said the two other men have been successfully saved.
“During the SAR operation conducted at 11.20am, the rescue team saw the victim’s hand in a pit but failed to remove him as he was buried under rocks and soil.”
Bau Fire and Rescue Station chief Tawing Lingem said the operation will continue at 8am tomorrow.
He said the victim is positioned at a dangerous location due to unstable rocks and soil movement, which could endanger the lives of rescuers. – Bernama, March 24, 2021
