IPOH – Social activist Kuan Chee Heng, who uploaded a Facebook post about a RM10,000 compound issued to a third party that turned out to be false, has apologised to police.
Ipoh police chief A. Asmadi Abdul Aziz said police have received an apology letter from Kuan, better known as Uncle Kentang, recently.
“He (Kuan) said he received information from the mother of an individual who was supposedly issued a RM10,000 compound, and hoped that police could assist. But investigations found the claim to be untrue.
“The individual was merely trying to dupe his mother to avoid sending her money.”
His post was also shared on former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s Facebook page and received much public attention.
In his post, Kuan alleged that the RM10,000 compound for flouting conditional movement control order standard operating procedures was issued to an assistant cook in Kg Rapat here on March 14.
The cook claimed that he was fined after he stepped out of the back door of a restaurant for a smoke, resulting in his inability to send money to his mother as his salary was deducted by the restaurant, which had settled the fine.
However, A. Asmadi was reported to have said a check found no such compound was issued by the inspection team in the district as claimed.
He said police are keeping an open mind on the letter of apology, but urged the public to not circulate unauthenticated news as they have a negative impact on police and their commitment to give their best. – Bernama, March 29, 2021
