KUALA LUMPUR – Umno has yet to pass a resolution instructing its party members to resign from government, said vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
“No decisions were made during the Umno general assembly that ordered its ministers, menteri besar, deputy ministers, excos, and government-linked company chairmen to withdraw from their positions – there were none.
“The resolution passed at the general assembly last weekend and endorsed by the Supreme Council is to remain with the Perikatan Nasional government until Parliament is dissolved,” he was quoted as saying by Malay Mail.
The party also formalised its decision to reject cooperation with PN at the coming general election.
Ismail Sabri was met by reporters after attending an armed forces service award ceremony here today.
Yesterday, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said resigning now would tarnish Umno’s name among the people, adding that the ministers still have many tasks to complete.
Following a meeting with the ministers yesterday, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he had advised them to remain in their positions for the benefit of the people.
On March 30, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin urged the Umno Supreme Council to hold party polls soon to resolve its current internal turmoil.
In a short statement released on his social media platforms, he said the party polls should be held this year as the leadership would not do well to postpone it after the general election.
Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said during his winding-up speech at the general assembly last weekend that when the time is right, all party leaders with government positions should relinquish their posts.
