KUALA LUMPUR – In light of the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah have extended their condolences to the British royal family.
Buckingham Palace announced that the 99-year-old consort to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II passed away today after spending more than a month in hospital and undergoing a heart procedure.
“His Royal Highness will be remembered by their Majesties, the government and people of Malaysia for His Royal Highness’ steadfast support for Her Majesty (Queen Elizabeth II),” said the statement carried on the Istana Negara Facebook page.
The Agong and his consort also acknowledged Prince Philip’s unwavering support for stronger ties between the United Kingdom and Malaysia through the Commonwealth of Nations.
The Commonwealth is a political association of 54 countries that were former colonies of Britain, of which Queen Elizabeth II is head.
In 1989, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip visited Malaysia when Perak’s Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah served as the ninth Agong of Malaysia. They visited again in 1998 when she officiated the closing ceremony of the XVI Commonwealth Games here. – The Vibes, April 9, 2021
