IPOH – Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) are not stopping young leaders from contesting in the 15th general election (GE15), said Umno election director Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.
He said in the past, several leaders have been appointed and given the trust to become menteris besar or ministers at a young age, and rejuvenation is an ongoing process in the party.
“Former Melaka chief minister Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik, former Negri Sembilan menteri besar Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad, former Pahang menteri besar Datuk Seri Najib Razak and former Perak menteri besar Tan Sri Ramli Ngah Talib were all aged between 20 and 40 when they were appointed.”
He said this attending the presentation of the TAJ International College smart partnership certificate to seven government agencies here today.
Tajuddin was asked to comment on the non-governmental organisations’ demand for improvement in the country’s democratic practices, including limiting the age of parliamentary candidates to below 65 years old.
The Pasir Salak MP, however, said there is a need for a combination of young and experienced leaders to govern the country.
“We always give opportunities to young people who have physical and mental advantages, but they also have disadvantages in terms of experience when compared with seasoned politicians,” he said. – Bernama, April 14, 2021
