KUALA LUMPUR – The bankruptcy declared on Datuk Sng Chee Hua, father of Julau MP Larry Sng, was not politically motivated, but the result of a family dispute.
Larry told The Vibes that Chee Hua’s brother was the one who initiated court proceedings, but stopped short of explaining the reason behind the move.
“It is not (related to any political pressure). It has nothing to do with the (Perikatan Nasional) government.
“The person who sued him was his own brother. This is a family issue. It is just a personal matter.”
The Vibes reported that the Kuching High Court had declared Chee Hua, who himself was a Julau lawmaker, bankrupt on March 24, according to a March 26 notice.
It is understood that Chee Hua himself filed for bankruptcy on January 18 this year, with respect to a judgment obtained by his brother, Sng Chee Kian.
His bankruptcy news comes amid speculations that the government is threatening several MPs into crossing over and declaring support for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, or risk action being taken against them and their families.
Larry himself quit PKR and relinquished his position as Sarawak chapter chief in late February to become a government-friendly independent MP.
Like his son, Chee Hua is also an active politician, having served multiple positions in different political parties, including as deputy president of Parti Rakyat Sarawak.
Most recently, he won the PKR polls in November 2018 to become Sarikei division chief.
The Sng family is known for its political dynasty as Chee Hua’s father, Sng Joo, was the “Kapitan Cina” in Kapit. – The Vibes, April 16, 2021
